The world has changed. If your competitor's operating costs are lower, and their software costs are higher, you are at a significant disadvantage. Free software provides high quality, enterprise ready, cost effective solutions. For example, certain departments run Web Logic. Other departments run JBoss. The software running on Web Logic takes over 10x the time to maintain and administer, and hefty licensing fees.
Meanwhile the JBoss server runs with a single administrator allocating almost no time to maintaining the system, because 'it just works'.
